DESTROY THE MAN, KEEP THE BODY

2019 marks the 400th anniversary of the first enslaved Africans arriving in what is now the United States. Since the first ship landed, African-Americans have endured slavery, Black Codes and Jim Crow. Through all of this, the people that President Abraham Lincoln once referred to as a "troublesome presence" have persisted, standing together and supporting each other while fighting for the rights afforded in the U.S. Constitution. 

The ancestors of African-Americans laid a strong foundation and each succeeding generation has lifted each other up. In "Destroy the Man, Keep the Body," artist Stephen Hayes uses sculpture and mixed media to offer a visual representation of these support systems and the challenges African-Americans have faced the last 400 years.
