INTANGIBLE LINES

Gabrielle Duggan’s work emanates inequalities within contemporary performances of gender and exhibitions of power. Ambiguity plays an important role, signifying slippage of power from one subject to another. Duggan uses fiber systems of tension and balance to reflect social, political, and historical implications of power. Objects and spaces are constructed precariously by applying repetitive actions to post-consumer, post-industrial, and traditional fine art materials. Through foregrounds and backgrounds, materials and shadows, that shape-shift depending on real-time perspective, initial perceptions are undermined, aesthetic and material hierarchies become disoriented.

Intangible Lines considers the means and evidence around invisible forces of power. Here, lines represent the power dynamics from different angles as evidence of force from invisible momentum (water on a stone), a means of force leaving invisible but substantial impact (reins on a horse), and signals of control and chaos (threads in space and in relation to each other).

Gabe Duggan (b. Buffalo, NY) is an Assistant Professor at the East Carolina University. She has taught fibers/textiles at the University of North Texas, Georgia State University, and North Carolina State University and participated in residencies and exhibitions nationally.
